| + | Jacob Thomas Ness was born to Thomas (a Commodore) and Cynthia (a Starfleet doctor) Ness on Earth. Ness majored in Starship Engineering at the Academy, mentored by [[William James|Professor William James]]. He graduated 4th in his class, and was posted to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, where he helped design several components of the [[Akira Class]] starship. Once the Dominion War began, ship design was less of a priority, and ship repair was.
